Book Review: Fear Farm by Vincent Ralph

Interesting story, at the same time I requested Corpse Creek, I also requested Fear Farm based on the cover alone, I mean … LOOK AT IT! This is the story of how I read books three and four of a series before reading books one and two! I was already interested in seeing more of this weird little town, and Fear Farm definitely delivered on the creepy atmosphere and sequel for me.

The whole idea of setting a murder mystery inside a horror attraction where everyone is literally supposed to be scary was so much fun. There’s already this constant feeling that something isn’t quite right in Bleak Haven, but throwing Tori into Fear Farm,surrounded by fake blood, costumes, scares, and people actively trying to terrify each other, made it even harder to tell when something was actually wrong. Obviously, when a place has a history of mysterious “accidents,” the correct response is to investigate it yourself. Teenagers make excellent decisions.

The atmosphere was easily my favorite part. It had that creepy fall haunted-attraction vibe that I love without relying entirely on jump scares or gore to make it unsettling. There was always this little bit of tension in the background that made me suspicious of pretty much everyone at some point.

I also really liked Tori. She’s determined enough to go looking for answers when everyone else seems perfectly happy ignoring what’s happening, which is exactly the kind of character who is going to walk directly into danger while I sit there thinking, “Please don’t do that,” knowing full well she absolutely will.

Was it perfect? No. But it was creepy, fast, entertaining, and exactly the kind of YA horror/mystery that is easy for me to fly through.

I somehow entered Bleak Haven halfway through the series, and now I’m invested enough that I need to go back and read what I missed. Apparently doing things in order continues to be optional around here across most aspects of my life.
